Kony, Limbaugh, and lemmings

Kony, Limbaugh, and lemmings

There has been a lot of discussion lately in the social media sphere of such people as KONY and Limbaugh. And it has me wondering if social media helps or hurts such issues.

Social media is a big and rapidly growing forum for information as well as misinformation. And is creating a platform in which practically ANYONE can have a significant and far reaching affect from the comfort of their own home. Influencing governments and politics. Consumers and big brands. Audiences and the media. In a way that seems almost surreal but at the same time making even the smallest voice matter.

But before you click that like button have you ever thought about how much you really matter?

Do we matter because of what we know or because of what we believe?

Take Limbaugh for example. He made some statements regarding birth control and sluts that didn’t do much for his image. I have not read the actual conversation, so I have no opinion (yet) of exactly happened. Because I do not know exactly what happened.

And the same goes for KONY 2012. I have lived in Africa. Traveled to eight of it’s countries. And know it is a continent in distress. On multiple fronts. Including KONY. Yet, again I have not looked into the facts for myself on this organization they work for. So I have suspended any impassioned opinions.

But I do know what many of my “friends”on facebook think of them. What my followers on twitter think of them. And what is being pinned about them. Both pro and con. And if I took their words for truth I know what side I would be on. Or which cliff I would jump off of. Which is really all the people promoting these opinions care about.

Number of tweets. Number of views. Number of “likes”. Number of comments. Not wether or not you know the truth.

For all they care you could be a lemming jumping off a cliff. So long as you are jumping off their cliff and not the oppositions cliff, they are happy.

So I’m going to sit. Right here on my proverbial plateau and see if I can sneak in some research of facts between loads of laundry dishes and status checks to see if my brother’s baby is on her way. The only really productive and factual use I have for facebook today!

I have a bad habit of seeing something and not really looking into it much, just jumping on the bandwagon and protesting. I almost did it with the KONY thing – I saw what people were posting, looked him up on Wikipedia and almost began recycling video after video and Pinning image after image.. And then I stopped, thought that maybe I should actually look into the issue and the movement behind it before jumping up on my soapbox about it.

This post is a great reminder that sometimes, peoples motivations to spread a message aren’t always about what should/needs to be done regarding the issue, but like you said – about exposure and hits instead.
